Shiritori anecdote
Picture of the Day: Kanan's countryside
This is a farm which is across the street from the Junior High and the Town Hall. I take pictures of it often. This is one of them.
I've been doing a lot of interesting things in the last month, and I still intend to write a post to recap them when I get the time. For now though, I'll just share an amusing anecdote from one of my classes today.
In one of the 2nd year classes, we played English Shiritori. For those of you who aren't familiar with Shiritori, it is a Japanese language game where one person says a word, the next person says a word which starts with the same syllable the last one ended with, etc.
We played the game using English words, and each word started with the letter that the previous one ended with. Anyway, during the game, one girl kept raising her hand and shouting "SEX!" no matter what letter the last word ended with. Finally, there was a word which ended in S, and she went nuts. Of course when we called on her, she shouted, "SEEEEEX!!"
Amimoto-sensei then explained to the students that "sex" can also refer to gender, i.e. male or female. As an example, she mentioned that on passports, it says "Sex" in the place where it specifies whether the bearer is male or female. To illustrate this, I showed the students my passport and pointed out where it says "Sex." Being 13 year olds who had never before heard the word "sex" used to refer to anything but the act of having sex, the students got a huge kick out of that. When I showed it to one boy, he exclaimed, "Homma ni!" which means, "Wow, no kidding!" in Osaka dialect.
